Flash Five #19 – Understanding Brand Equity
Brand equity refers to all the intangible assets a brand builds in the minds of consumers that directly influence its business performance. It is not based solely on brand awareness, but also on perceived value, mental associations, trust, preference, and a brand’s ability to create a sustainable competitive advantage.
A strong brand reduces price sensitivity, improves media effectiveness, increases retention, and fosters long-term growth. Conversely, weak brand equity makes companies more dependent on promotion, advertising pressure, and purely transactional strategies.
Brand equity is built gradually through consistent positioning, the repetition of brand codes, customer experience, perceived quality, and a company’s ability to create distinctive memory structures in the minds of its audiences.
Understanding brand equity thus allows us to go beyond short-term metrics to analyze what truly creates value over time: preference, differentiation, and brand awareness in its market.
